Goalkeeper Course (5 Day Residential)

This August 2010, Just4keepers ran our International 5 Day residential course. With J4K coaches coming from 6 countries and Goalkeeper students coming from 8 countries, this was a remarkable event!

However, rather than me saying how great this 5 day goalkeeper training course went, please read just a few of the parents and students testimonies,!

Just4keepers 5 Day International Camp: August 2010

 Testimonies:

I would like to thank Ray and all the coaches at Peterborough for sharing their many years of coaching experience with me and giving me an experience I will never forget. The training was hard work but I feel that I have improved as a goalkeeper and also developed as a person. I enjoyed every minute I was in Peterborough and can’t wait to get back there. Thanks guys.
JO JO

I would like to thank you and all of the other coaches at the camp for giving me such a great experience and for creating such a brilliant learning atmosphere. I feel like that in the 5 days my keeping has come along fantastically and most importantly i now have much more confidence as a keeper, something that was severely lacking. This improvement was noted after keeping a clean sheet (the first one for my new club) in the last training/warm up game for the up and coming season. My reactions were sharper and my distribution was better, with notable improvements to my handling also recognized by my team mates (whilst wearing your Just4keepers finger-save gloves by the way). So, i'd just like to really thank you and the coaches, especially Mark, Marcel and Martin, for all the time and effort you put in making it one fantastic camp and will surely be attending next year!

Mitchell Barwick

Kieran and myself just wanted to say a huge thanks for the camp, kieran had a fantastic time, he hasnt stopped talking about the week Lol and is already wanting to come again next year. I hope he wasnt to much trouble (as i know he can be a handful!)

Sue and kieran chaffe
Ray,

Thanks again to Ian, you and all the other coaches for a great and fun week. Dan thoroughly enjoyed it and so did I! The sight of 90+ students training out together was an inspiring sight to behold.
Long live J4K! Smile emoticon

Graham Herbert

Just a little note to say thanks for the fantastic week Ray, was by far the best camp i have ever been on, the drills were fantastic and the coaches, all amazing. I had a laugh but was worked incredibly hard at the same time and the weather made the course even more interesting lol
Thank you very much for a fantastic week and i am looking forward to the next one

James Reed

Mitch has just come back from the camp at Oundle, we would just like to say what a great time he had, and he has learnt so much, with the help of yourself and the rest of the coaches. I would like to say a BIG thanks to everyone as although Mitch did not stay as a residential (we only live 12 miles away) he was always made to feel welcome by everyone,  especially a big shout to Lewis Bland and George Watt who allowed him to use their room as a base and somewhere to get changed in.
Mitchel Leggets (Parents)

Hi Ray,

I'm another one who is going to make your day. Please feel free to be bigheaded.
John has not stopped talking about the camp, he thoroughly enjoyed his week.  It is testament to you and the other coaches that he has come home a better keeper and in a great mood. He has told me that due to being coached by Just 4 Keepers, he is now in a great frame of mind and feels extremely confident in all he does. I don't know what you were teaching him, but he now scores goals as well as saving them! He played on Sunday and scored from a clearance. He has asked me to thank you and the other guys for a fantastic week. He will be seeing Ian Pledger later this week and will no doubt tell him personally how he feels.
Thank you very much Ray, both my wife and myself feel honoured that you looked after John in the caring way that you did.

Paul Swales

Plus i just want to say that week was the best week of my life so far, loads of good memories plus made a load of new friends, also i have learnt so much from all the coaching i received. If the camp is on next year you can guarantee that i will be the first one to get my name on the list
James Webber

Hi Ray
Just a quick mail to give you Toms thoughts on the camp…………………..
I know he must have enjoyed it as I didn’t hear a word from him for the whole 5 days!!
Anyhow he really enjoyed the course and can’t wait for the next one, he says the location was superb; coaches were very friendly and helpful, food was excellent and nutritious!!
He felt at home all week and made loads of friends, I’m sure he will see you next year.
 Tony and Tom Lloyd
Hi Ray
My son, Harrison (the one that you had to give a pound to!) loved the camp. His exact words were : “I really enjoyed the camp, it was much better than PGL.”
He says that he learnt a lot on the course and got the most out of the sessions on angles. He also was happy with training in the rain
The venue and facilities looked excellent and Harrison also enjoyed the float war in the swimming pool.
Thanks for everything – he definitely wants to go again next year!
Finally, we haven’t received the ebook on how to be a professional goalkeeper yet – can you send please?
Thanks for looking after Harrison so well.
Regards

John Pitt

Dear Ray,

Wanted to put in words how grateful we as parents are with how you was with our son Dylan (Homesick boy) Parkin.

Its always hard leaving them, and to be asked to come home straight away was hard to here, but with yours and Ian's help he managed to come through the 5 days and now wants to come every time you do a camp!!  Think that speaks volumes for how you handled and helped him grow up in them few days.

Now onto the goalkeeping part!!

He has told me he's a new improved keeper now after 5 days with you and your coaches!!
As you mentioned in your presentation he never shut up on way home telling us what he was doing all week and his biggest smile was telling how he and the little Slovakia lad won a game on Wednesday! He was so proud of this and you could tell how he was speaking.

He wants to do more coaching now and has mentioned something about a local J4K school, so if you could send us the details we would be so grateful.

If any future parents would like to speak to other parents who have sent there kids to your camps then please feel free to forward our details i,e e-mail address or mobile number and we will totally support the camps you do.

Again massive thanks to Ian, your coaches and a big thank you to yourself, and I know Dylan is already looking forward to seeing you again at next camp.

Best regards,

Brian and Lisa Parkin.

Goalkeeper Course in Hertfordshire

Just 4 Keepers in Hertfordshire held its Summer goalkeeping training days at Harvesters Football club on the 26th of July and the 16th of August. With 40 keepers in attendance the Boys and Girls enjoyed a full morning of handling and footwork before having the chance to make there very own camera saves with a photograph being taken off all attending the course throwing themselves up into the top corner to make a wonder save! The morning was concluded with shooting games and a bit of work about narrowing the angle before lunch.
The group then enjoyed a game of 'Handball' made famous in football having been where Peter Schmeichel picked up a number of his intimidating techniques. After a close game the afternoon was finished off with 2vs2 'Goalie Wars' and an 'Elimination Game' to finish. After a succesful day everyone went home with their J4K T Shirt and a big smile on their faces!

Goalkeeper Gloves Review

Goalkeeper Gloves Review

Is it important, to get a keeper glove review before you buy?

My answer is, Yes andalso no!

The reason I say yes is it obviously befenficial before you buy anything to try and get other keepers views on the product you are about to buy. Especially if these people have worn the gloves for goalkeeper matches or goalkeeper training sessions and in particular its a keeper glove you are thinking about buying. Because, you can see if the grip is good (in both dry and wet weather), the glove is durable etc etc.

The reason why I say no, is you also have to be very very careful!!!

There are so many goalkeeper gloves on the market now, with different palm cuts, for example, negative cut, flat palm and roll finger glove palms. Also not forgetting finger save keeper gloves.

Now most goalkeepers do not know this but the shape of your hand will determine what goalie glove palm cut is 'Right for YOUR hand"

Get goalkeeper gloves review for YOUR hand shape!

j4kThis is not set in stone this process, but generally goalkeepers with wide broad hands will best suite, negative cut or flat palm goalie gloves, were keepers with thin hands generally best suit roll finger.

When many keepers go onto goalkeeper glove review websites they sadly do not realise how important knowing what glove is right for the shape of their hand. So if they have a thin hand and read all great comments about a flat palm or Negative cut gloves, even thought the comments might be great and they buy, they probably are buying the wrong glove for the shape of their hand!

So before you get comments on gloves for yourself, and you even think of buying a pair of goalkeeping gloves, please make sure its the right palm/glove for your hand!!!

You can then search keeper glove reviews for gloves that fir your hand shape.

I hope this goalkeeping tip helped?

Goalkeeper Training Drills

With there being so many many Goalkeeper Training Drills on sale on the internet today with different ranges of DVD’s, how do you know what the best ones to go for is?

As a goalkeeper coach, I think the first thing you have to look out for, is who is the coach selling these goalkeeping drills?
I know goalie coaches, who are nice guys who have collated their own goalkeeper session plan drills but me personally I would not buy these drills from them as I want to only purchase from a goalkeeper coach who has experience and has a good reputation of being a great keeper coach and who has developed many keepers!

This is nothing against these coaches, it’s just I am a firm believer, if you want to be the best you have to learn from the best!

A PICTURE TELLS TEN THOUSAND WORDS!

I would also strongly recommend that you buy Goalkeeper Training drills DVD's rather than purchasing these drills in a book where these drills have been drawn up and put in print.

I think why this is as important as a GK coach, is that you need to capture how intense this drill (s) should be, how hard to work your students, what tempo is needed for this drill, whether a drill should be used for kiddies or adults etc etc, and it can sometimes be difficult capturing the ‘Emotions’ goalkeeper drills in print.

Also a book will not explain a mistake thoroughly.

FO EXAMPLE: If you are watching a Goalkeeping DVD and the coach is coaching his students, and that student makes a mistake, and the coach corrects this mistake, well you can see in real time how you could solve this mistake. And if you did not catch it the first time, you can always replay the DVD until you understand how to fix that particular goalkeeping problem.

Again you cannot get this from a book, as mistakes are not really highlighted.

The only people I recommend getting goalkeeper training drills from out of a book are goalkeeper coaches with experience. So if you are GK coach who is still wet behind the ears, my advice is get a goalkeeping coaching DVD rather than a book. They are more or less the same price anyway and I believe will help with the development of your goalkeeper coaching skills.

Umbro Goalkeeper Gloves

I have been asked to do quick review on the Umbro Goalkeeper Gloves

After the world cup loads of my students have asked me about his glove. It does look a really nice glove and the ones David James wears are good. But these are the top of the range ones probably about £50+.

The problem I am seeing with my students is they are going to the local big sports outlets and buying the replicas at about £10-£15. These gloves are like paper and not really giving the goalkeeper much padding and protection as the palms and backhand are not that thick. But you have to remember these are the replicas you are buying in these shops.

I am going to plug the £15 Just4keepers Reaction gloves now. Lol
When you look at the quality in these gloves for the same price, there is no comparison, hence why the Reactions are our biggest seller.

So what you have to understand, just because these gloves look the same as what David James wore in the world cup, you may be buying replicas, which are not ideal unless you are just a bambino starting off in your goalkeeping.

Most glove brands to do this and offer a replica and normally they are the brands biggest seller because kids see their idol pro keeper wearing this glove then think they are buying the same glove, when in reality they are not.

In the Just4keepers glove range we do not offer replicas because of the reason above as we want our keepers wearing the best materials for their age!
So be warned: If you are buying from local sports retailers, check you are not buying the replicas!

I hope this tip helps?

Finger Protection Goalkeeper Gloves

With hundreds of different finger protection goalkeeper gloves on the market, how do you pick the correct goalie glove for you?

I have been a goalkeeper coach for over 20 years now and one of the MOST IMPORTANT bits of advice I tell my students when I advise them on buying finger protected is, is when you try them on, make sure you can completely clench your fist!

If you cannot do this, PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE THIS GLOVE!
If you cannot make a full fist and you try and punch the football, you can easily break your fingers. In the early days, the finger protection goalie gloves were brilliant at stopping your fingers going backwards but were a nightmare because the goalkeeper could not make a fist, which can be dangerous.
As technology has improved, this problem seems to have got better with the majority of gloves, but in certain 'replica' goalkeeper gloves, this is still sadly a problem.

The good and bad news is, there are ALOT of goalkeeper gloves with finger protection now. So how do you choose the correct finger save goalkeeper glove?
This is what I advise my goalkeeper students when buying.
1. Search the internet and check out as many finger protected gloves as you can.

2. See which glove designs you like.

3. Try and see if your local sports shop stocks these gloves. (So you can try on without obligation to purchase)

4. You could maybe also order off the internet and simply return if you do not like. (Please make sure the glove internet company will do refunds though... as some do not!)

5. Do not be afraid to try different goalkeeper gloves as most keeper gloves are more or less the same now. Well the goalie gloves at the mid to top of range bracket are. (Try and stay away from the lower branded keeper gloves)

In fact, do you know most gloves now are made in the same factories!

The message I want to get across in this article, is DO NOT, I say AGAIN, DO NOT buy finger protection goalkeeper gloves were you cannot make a full fist.

Picking the correct Goalkeeper Shorts

How do you pick the best Goalkeeper Shorts?
Most goalkeepers will go to a shop and buy the first padded goalkeeper shorts that they see.
Big mistake!
I think maybe goalkeepers buy (or a parent of a keeper buys) because they just see goalkeeper shorts with PADS and think that these goalie pants will do the job?
But not so!
When you buy padded goalie shorts you should make sure!
1.       The padding is not too thick
2.       The padding is not too thin
3.       The shorts go to the knee
4.       There is enough padding around the hip
Let me explain further:
1. If the padding is too thick, it will restrict your movement:
2. if the padding is too thin, it’s pointless wasting you money. Seriously I have seen padded goalkeeper shorts and the padding is like paper!
3. You need padded short to at least go to your knee, so when you slide out your short can ride up your leg, thus protecting your thighs and hips.
4. Some short padding do not protect the full hip. Make sure there is plenty of padding protecting your hips!
IMPORTANT: When you try and pair of these pants on, ‘FEEL THEM ON YOU’ on you! I know its sounds silly what I say but feel the padding to see if there is good padding around your hips, not too thick and certainly not too thin.
IMPORTANT IMPORTANT: Then make sure you can bend and twist in them as you need to be able to be flexible in your goalkeeper shorts otherwise it will restrict your movement and YOU will concede goals!
I hope this goalkeeping tip helps you, so please remember do not just but a pair of padded shorts just because they have padding on them, you have to make sure these shorts are right for you!

Goalkeeper padded Trousers

How do you pick the best Goalkeeper Trousers?
Most goalkeepers will go to a shop and buy the first padded goalkeeper trousers that they see.

Big mistake!

I think maybe goalkeepers buy (or a parent of a keeper buys) because they just see goalkeeper pants with PADS and think that these goalie pants will do the job?
But not necessary!

There are padded keeper pants where the pads are just too thick making movement to difficult for the keeper. OR

On the other hand, the pads could be too thin, like paper, so not worth even putting on because they will not protect the goalkeeper!

Why you have to pick correct goalkeeper pants!!!

Well because above really, they pads could be too thin or even too thick!

So when you try and pair of these pants on, ‘FEEL THEM’ on you! I know its sounds daft but feel the padding to see if there is good padding, not too thick and not too thin.

IMPORTANT: Then make sure you can bend and twist in them as you need to be able to move in your pants otherwise it will restrict your movement and WILL cause you to concede goals!

That’s why most goalkeepers opt for the ¾ goalkeeper pants because they is less restriction on movement and can worn both for training and match play.

I hope this tip helps you, so please remember do not just but a pair of goalkeeper pants just because they have padding on them!

Padded Goalkeeper Pants

How do you pick the best Goalkeeper Pants?
Most goalkeepers will go to a shop and buy the first padded goalkeeper pant that they see.

How to wash my goalkeeper gloves

How to wash my Goalkeeper Gloves
Most goalkeepers make a massive mistake when they wash their goalies gloves!
Mistake number 1:
They put in a washing machine
Mistake Number 2:
The tumble dry or worst still but on a radiator.
If you do the two above steps, your goalkeeper gloves will not last five minutes!
SO HOW SHOULD YOU WASH YOUR GLOVES?
1: Do not add any type of detergent or cleaner. Just have a bowl of luke warm water.
2: Gently wash your gloves with your fingers until you get the dirt off.
3: Rinse your Gloves.
4: Repeat number 1 and 2, so you are getting all dirt off gloves.
Drying
5: Put your gloves on a dry towel (palm up) and let them dry at room temperature.
I repeat DO NOT use false heat like radiator or boiler, you must let them dry slowly and with natural room temperature heat.
Once your goalkeeper gloves are dry put them in your goalkeeper glove bag or wrap them in a towel and put them in your kitbag.
If you do the above, your gloves will keep their grip longer (so will be a better goalie glove) and they were also last you alot longer, thus saving you money on having to buy more gloves!
I hope this tip helps you get better use out of your goalie gloves and saves you money!

Kids Goalkeeper Gloves

Kids goalkeeper gloves

As a parent how to you pick the correct kids goalkeeper gloves for your child?

With literally hundreds of keeper gloves to choose from, I understand just how easy it is for a parent to be intimidated by which gloves to choose.

There are finger save gloves, negative cut, flat cut, supa cut, supa dupa cut, etc etc... so it gets really confusing if you do not know what to look for!

Obviously every goalkeeper glove brand is going to try and persuade you to buy their glove by making their glove name sound jazzy, and state they are the 'best goalkeeper glove on the market!'

But the truth is, most decent goalkeeper gloves are all the SAME! DO NOT be fooled by jazzy names or flashy colours. They are all the same.

The biggest mistake parents make when buying kids goalkeeper gloves for their child is:

1. They go to sports wholesale shops and purchase glove for less than $20 (£10). However most of these gloves are just a 2mm or 3mm palm, which are just too thin for a child. These gloves offer little padding and they do not last very long!

2. They go to the extreme and buy the 'So Called' BEST glove on the market for $100+ (£50+). There is NO such thing as the best goalie glove on the market!

If your child is under 13 years old, Parents, PLEASE DO NOT pay more than $60 (£30) as there are a few reasons why you are wasting your money:

Reason 1: Children to not look after their gloves and if they are not looked after properly, they will not last one month!

Reason 2: Most soccer pitches that youngsters play on, are muddy, gritty etc, so even though you may have a pair of junior goalkeeper gloves worth a $1000 (£2000) if the pitch is poor the gloves will not be effective.
Reason 3: If a poor soccer ball is used, again even if the junior gloves cost a fortune, they will not be effective!

So in my honest professional opinion and over thirty years of playing in goal and goalkeeper coaching at the highest level, I believe parents should buy middle of the range junior goalkeeper gloves.
Please believe me when I say, for children that middle range keeper gloves, will do the SAME job as the top of the range glove... period!

And the bonus is, you will get two (maybe three) more times keeper gloves for your money!
So this tip should save you A LOT of money over a soccer season.

I have coached over 10,000 goalkeepers over the past 20 years and I go mad when I see my goalkeeper students losing money by buying the wrong keeper glove.

I hope this tip helps mums and dads save a fortune on buying kids goalkeeper gloves for their child.
