Goalkeeper Course (5 Day Residential)

This August 2010, Just4keepers ran our International 5 Day residential course. With J4K coaches coming from 6 countries and Goalkeeper students coming from 8 countries, this was a remarkable event!

I would like to thank you and all of the other coaches at the camp for giving me such a great experience and for creating such a brilliant learning atmosphere. I feel like that in the 5 days my keeping has come along fantastically and most importantly i now have much more confidence as a keeper, something that was severely lacking. This improvement was noted after keeping a clean sheet (the first one for my new club) in the last training/warm up game for the up and coming season. My reactions were sharper and my distribution was better, with notable improvements to my handling also recognized by my team mates (whilst wearing your Just4keepers finger-save gloves by the way). Mitch has just come back from the camp at Oundle, we would just like to say what a great time he had, and he has learnt so much, with the help of yourself and the rest of the coaches. I would like to say a BIG thanks to everyone as although Mitch did not stay as a residential (we only live 12 miles away) he was always made to feel welcome by everyone,  especially a big shout to Lewis Bland and George Watt who allowed him to use their room as a base and somewhere to get changed in.

John has not stopped talking about the camp, he thoroughly enjoyed his week.  It is testament to you and the other coaches that he has come home a better keeper and in a great mood. He has told me that due to being coached by Just 4 Keepers, he is now in a great frame of mind and feels extremely confident in all he does. I don't know what you were teaching him, but he now scores goals as well as saving them! He played on Sunday and scored from a clearance. He has asked me to thank you and the other guys for a fantastic week. He will be seeing Ian Pledger later this week and will no doubt tell him personally how he feels.

My son, Harrison (the one that you had to give a pound to!) loved the camp. His exact words were : “I really enjoyed the camp, it was much better than PGL.”

He says that he learnt a lot on the course and got the most out of the sessions on angles. He also was happy with training in the rain

The venue and facilities looked excellent and Harrison also enjoyed the float war in the swimming pool.

Dear Ray,

Wanted to put in words how grateful we as parents are with how you was with our son Dylan (Homesick boy) Parkin.

Its always hard leaving them, and to be asked to come home straight away was hard to here, but with yours and Ian's help he managed to come through the 5 days and now wants to come every time you do a camp!!  Think that speaks volumes for how you handled and helped him grow up in them few days.

Now onto the goalkeeping part!!

He has told me he's a new improved keeper now after 5 days with you and your coaches!!

As you mentioned in your presentation he never shut up on way home telling us what he was doing all week and his biggest smile was telling how he and the little Slovakia lad won a game on Wednesday! He was so proud of this and you could tell how he was speaking.

He wants to do more coaching now and has mentioned something about a local J4K school, so if you could send us the details we would be so grateful.

Goalkeeper Course in Hertfordshire

Just 4 Keepers in Hertfordshire held its Summer goalkeeping training days at Harvesters Football club on the 26th of July and the 16th of August. With 40 keepers in attendance the Boys and Girls enjoyed a full morning of handling and footwork before having the chance to make there very own camera saves with a photograph being taken off all attending the course throwing themselves up into the top corner to make a wonder save! The morning was concluded with shooting games and a bit of work about narrowing the angle before lunch.
The group then enjoyed a game of 'Handball' made famous in football having been where Peter Schmeichel picked up a number of his intimidating techniques. After a close game the afternoon was finished off with 2vs2 'Goalie Wars' and an 'Elimination Game' to finish. After a succesful day everyone went home with their J4K T Shirt and a big smile on their faces!

Is it important, to get a keeper glove review before you buy?

My answer is, Yes andalso no!

The reason I say yes is it obviously befenficial before you buy anything to try and get other keepers views on the product you are about to buy. Especially if these people have worn the gloves for goalkeeper matches or goalkeeper training sessions and in particular its a keeper glove you are thinking about buying. Because, you can see if the grip is good (in both dry and wet weather), the glove is durable etc etc.

The reason why I say no, is you also have to be very very careful!!!

There are so many goalkeeper gloves on the market now, with different palm cuts, for example, negative cut, flat palm and roll finger glove palms. Also not forgetting finger save keeper gloves.

Now most goalkeepers do not know this but the shape of your hand will determine what goalie glove palm cut is 'Right for YOUR hand"

Get goalkeeper gloves review for YOUR hand shape! 

This is not set in stone this process, but generally goalkeepers with wide broad hands will best suite, negative cut or flat palm goalie gloves, were keepers with thin hands generally best suit roll finger.

When many keepers go onto goalkeeper glove review websites they sadly do not realise how important knowing what glove is right for the shape of their hand. So if they have a thin hand and read all great comments about a flat palm or Negative cut gloves, even thought the comments might be great and they buy, they probably are buying the wrong glove for the shape of their hand!

So before you get comments on gloves for yourself, and you even think of buying a pair of goalkeeping gloves, please make sure its the right palm/glove for your hand!!!

You can then search keeper glove reviews for gloves that fir your hand shape.

Goalkeeper Training Drills

With there being so many many Goalkeeper Training Drills on sale on the internet today with different ranges of DVD’s, how do you know what the best ones to go for is?

As a goalkeeper coach, I think the first thing you have to look out for, is who is the coach selling these goalkeeping drills?

I know goalie coaches, who are nice guys who have collated their own goalkeeper session plan drills but me personally I would not buy these drills from them as I want to only purchase from a goalkeeper coach who has experience and has a good reputation of being a great keeper coach and who has developed many keepers!

This is nothing against these coaches, it’s just I am a firm believer, if you want to be the best you have to learn from the best!

A PICTURE TELLS TEN THOUSAND WORDS! 

I would also strongly recommend that you buy Goalkeeper Training drills DVD's rather than purchasing these drills in a book where these drills have been drawn up and put in print.

I think why this is as important as a GK coach, is that you need to capture how intense this drill (s) should be, how hard to work your students, what tempo is needed for this drill, whether a drill should be used for kiddies or adults etc etc, and it can sometimes be difficult capturing the ‘Emotions’ goalkeeper drills in print.

Also a book will not explain a mistake thoroughly.

FO EXAMPLE: If you are watching a Goalkeeping DVD and the coach is coaching his students, and that student makes a mistake, and the coach corrects this mistake, well you can see in real time how you could solve this mistake. And if you did not catch it the first time, you can always replay the DVD until you understand how to fix that particular goalkeeping problem.

Again you cannot get this from a book, as mistakes are not really highlighted.

The only people I recommend getting goalkeeper training drills from out of a book are goalkeeper coaches with experience. So if you are GK coach who is still wet behind the ears, my advice is get a goalkeeping coaching DVD rather than a book. They are more or less the same price anyway and I believe will help with the development of your goalkeeper coaching skills.

Umbro Goalkeeper Gloves

I have been asked to do quick review on the Umbro Goalkeeper Gloves

After the world cup loads of my students have asked me about his glove. It does look a really nice glove and the ones David James wears are good. But these are the top of the range ones probably about £50+.

The problem I am seeing with my students is they are going to the local big sports outlets and buying the replicas at about £10-£15. These gloves are like paper and not really giving the goalkeeper much padding and protection as the palms and backhand are not that thick. But you have to remember these are the replicas you are buying in these shops.

I am going to plug the £15 Just4keepers Reaction gloves now. Lol
When you look at the quality in these gloves for the same price, there is no comparison, hence why the Reactions are our biggest seller.

So what you have to understand, just because these gloves look the same as what David James wore in the world cup, you may be buying replicas, which are not ideal unless you are just a bambino starting off in your goalkeeping.

Most glove brands to do this and offer a replica and normally they are the brands biggest seller because kids see their idol pro keeper wearing this glove then think they are buying the same glove, when in reality they are not.

In the Just4keepers glove range we do not offer replicas because of the reason above as we want our keepers wearing the best materials for their age!
So be warned: If you are buying from local sports retailers, check you are not buying the replicas!
