England V Germany Result

England 1 German 4. Bad Result

I do not want to say I told you so.  For years now I have been trying to state that there are too many foreign players in our leagues, especially goalkeepers!

You may not know that I have had a petition website going for nearly 3 years now, trying to get the FA to make every English Professional Soccer Club have at LEAST one goalkeeper in its squad. (I will give the website below to check out)

Judging by England’s performance at the 2010 World Cup, it looks like this problem is much much deeper than the goalkeeping position!

Ironically, people were quite rightly worried about the goalkeeping situation, however I believe David James was England best player in the 2010 World Cup!

People are saying that the England players are not good enough, but the fact is, they are the best players we have in England at present, and like other countries were the manager has the luxury of having the choice, of 3 or 4 goalkeepers, 3 or 4 left backs, 3 or 4 centre forwards etc etc... Fabio has not had this choice!
The defeat by a young German side last night, underlines how far behind England still is!!!

Well what’s my answer?

1: For one I think there has to be a limit on foreign players playing in our professional leagues. Especially Goalkeepers!!! (see my website below)

2. I also think our local council, Local FA’s and numerous sporting funding organisations need to invest in more quality facilities for our youngsters, but more importantly, do not make them that expensive to hire that nobody can use them! (So have venues subsidized)

3. I also believe the local FA’s should stop giving away coaching qualifications. I know they are a business and want to make money, which is fair enough. But I kid you not, my 75 year old mum could pass the FA level 1 outfielder or goalkeeper award. I have seen so many Level 1 or Level 2 coaches over the years who SHOULD NOT BE A COACHING, children. This is very worrying for English football.
Am I saying, stop these coaching qualifications?

No, I am not, what I am saying is make sure its quality coaches we have coming through out coaching system, not quantity!

I am obviously gutted our National team was embarrassed in this World Cup, but could this turn into a positive?

Will the powers that be, now put in a long term action plan to make sure this does not happen again?
Because if our best of the best are getting battered by a young German side or only scratching out a draw against teams we should be comfortably beating, something has to change?

Me personally, I think there will be a lot of talk... but nothing will really change?

But let’s see and hope heh?

Goalkeepers- do not get tired!

 Dear Goalkeeper

The amount of goalkeepers having over use injuries has increased over the years and I think one of the reasons is that children are now having 12 month seasons.

They have their normal football season, but then there are summer leagues and tournaments. Seriously, all I have read in the papers the last few weeks is.

Soccer tournaments in Liverpool

Soccer tournaments in Warrington

Soccer tournaments in Wirral.

Or

Summer leagues in Liverpool, summer leagues in Warrington, summer leagues in Wirral, etc  etc.

I am being deadly honest here: there are some goalkeepers I know in their early teens, who have played more games than me! And I was a professional goalkeeper of 10 years and have been playing in goal for a total of 30 years! This is not right!

If you read my last email, you would have read about my concerns of poor pitches. So if you are a keeper getting a pounding on these pitches for 12 months out of the year, it is going to take its toll on your body, so whenever you can REST!

Also maybe go and have a nice swim every couple of weeks. Nothing hard, just a nice swim as this will help take the weight of your body!

Also if you are parent of a goalkeeper you have to keep assessing this situation and if you believe your child is getting physically tired, maybe let him/her miss a tournament. I know you may be worried they may lose their place, but so what, there will be other clubs!

Remember your child is more important!

So my tip:

Is relax when you can and if your are playing week in week out and need a rest from playing, take your rest!

Remember professional goalkeepers and professional clubs have a 10 week break... so if professionals are taking a break, this should tell you the importance of taking a break!

Protect yourself Goalkeepers

Over the past few weekends, because I wanted to assess my goalkeepers in Liverpool and goalkeepers in Warrington I have been visiting many football venues throughout Liverpool and I have to say I am appalled at the playing surfaces!

A lot of pitches, especially in the goal mouths there was no grass!

Seriously, the goal keeper might as well been diving on concrete!
I know goalkeepers subscribe to Just4keepers all over the world, so if you are reading this I am not sure if you have this problem?

I am not a lover of councils, especially Liverpool City Council as I do not believe they put enough money in facilities that can enhance children, but this is a classic case I suppose of councils in every city!
Anyhow back to my tip!

I was amazed to see these keepers wearing no form of padding what’s so ever!
I understand a lot of keepers do not like using padding because it restricts your movement but common sense has to prevail here guys.

YOU HAVE TO LOOK ATER YOU BODY!

I have been playing in goal for 30 years now and confident that I can  dive on anything, but honestly I would have refused to play on some of these pitches as they were that bad!

I know it can be difficult to refuse to play for your team because of pressure from your team mates etc, but seriously, you have to protect yourself by wearing padding on your elbows, knees and hips!

If you are a parent of a youngster, remember it’s your responsibly to make sure your child is well protected!
BE SAFE- GETTING PADDED UP- PROTECT YOURSELF!
