Communicating as a goalkeeper

Most goalkeepers know the importance of talking in a game situation. Talking as a keeper is one of the most important traits to have and I will go as far to say that if you are a goalie who does not communicate to his defence and team mates, you will struggle playing at the high levels.

Because communication is vital as a keeper!

Now this article is actually not about the positive type of talking you should do between the sticks, like organising your defence or shouting for the ball. No, I am going to talk about a different type of talking that is bad for you.

When I walk around local soccer grounds to watch my goalkeeping students play their game, I am totally amazed by the amount of young goalkeepers who chat to people behind their goal.
Now most of the time, the person behind the goal is the parent and this can cause massive problems for the keeper who is playing.

I have actually seen goalkeepers leaning on the goal posts while the game is going on chatting to the person or persons behind their goal, which is very dangerous.

Two things happen here, one, you are out of position so if the opposing team break away and you are caught out of position, this will most probably result in a goal against you, which is bad for the team and also makes you look bad.

And two, you lose concentration! Concentration in arguably the most VITAL skill a GK needs to take out onto the pitch. In fact the best keepers in the world are the best because they have mastered how to concentrate while playing.

Even if you have a quick chat while playing, this will actually take you OUT of the game and again if an opposing team breaks away and you are not 100% focused on what’s happening in front of you, again do not be surprised if you concede a silly goal.

So if you are one of these parents who chats away to your child while they are playing their soccer game, please stop because you now know you are doing your goalkeeper/child more harm than good!

If attend goalie Schools at present, also ask your coach about this important trait!

Hi Guys

You HAVE TO VIEW THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is J4K South African student Philip De Gouveia who attends J4K Goalkeeper Coaching schools in

I met Phil when he attended ourr 5 day residential this year (2010) and he was one great lad. I then found out he went on south Africa Idol, which is like the x factor. What was great about this, he pretended to be serious even though he was going just for a laugh.

Junior Goalkeeper Gloves

Quick Tip: A lot of parents gets confused with looking for goalkeeper gloves for their child, and in particular sizing these gloves:

Parents also get mixed up when goalkeeper gloves are called junior goalkeeper gloves or even kids goalkeeper gloves. Whether a children’s glove is classed as a children’s, kids or junior goalkeeping glove, always try and go for the size.

So children’s gloves are sized between 4 and 7, Adults from 8 to 12.

I hope this quick tip helped?

Expensive Goalkeeper Coaching... are you getting ripped off?

I have been running goalkeeper coaching schools for over a decade now, and in this time I rarely look at what other goalkeeper schools are doing. This is not arrogance, it’s just I am soooo busy, plus I strongly believe in focusing on what you are doing yourself and not worrying about others.

At Just4keepers coaching we pride ourselves at providing high specification GK coaching, from experienced coaches at fair prices.

This week I have had a look at what some other GK schools are doing, some great, some not so great. But one sad thing I have noticed is how much money these coaching schools are charging. At J4K we pride ourselves at keeping prices low, especially with the tough financial times we are in. I think this comes from me being a parent myself, so I appreciate every penny counts for a lot of mums and dads.

So to see goalkeeping schools charging £10 plus for a hourly session is absolutely disgusting in my opinion and is a complete rip off. (That’s £50 per month!!).

Look if you want to pay this much for getting ripped off, oops I mean coached, well that is your choice but there is that many decent goalkeeper coaches about that will charge about £4-£6 for the hour, you are daft not to go to these guys instead!!!

What makes me laugh with the goalkeeping training schools that charge these high prices, is they state, we are doing this for the young kids, we love our students, we care for our students etc etc... This is like the farmer telling his prize turkey he loves him, just before he chops his head off for Christmas dinner.

You cannot tell someone you are doing them a favour, and then rip them off with over inflated prices.

Anyhow, it’s up to you as a parent but with myself, I do believe in paying for my children to get coached (my daughter does dance) but I think there is a fine line between paying for a service and getting ripped off. So if you are paying these high prices, you have to decide are you paying for a great service or getting ripped off?

Goalkeeper Camps from just £10 per day

Just4keepers has just launched a brand new programme to provide quality top rank professional goalkeeper coaching at great prices for budding young goalkeepers.

Sadly there are many goalkeeper coaching schools charging £20 PLUS per day for their one day goalkeeper camps but at Just4keeper goalkeeper schools our prices will start at just £10 per day.

We also will not try and tempt young goalkeepers to come to our camps by promising a premiership star will be there to sign autographs because too be honest, who really cares about this???

From my experience of running the biggest goalkeeper training school in the world for over a decade now, there is only one thing parents care about and that (quite rightly is) what are you going to do for my child!!!

And at J4K we have this down to a art:

I think somtimes, these camps have medicore goalkeeper coaches running the coaching sessions, so they need somebody like a premiership star there to take the focus of this fact!

At J4K we DO NOT really need a premiership star to be present because our coaches have that much playing experience anyway with the likes of Jim Leighton (MBE), Neil Cutler Ex Aston Villa, Kevin Pressman (Ex England) to name but a few, so there is no need for us to try and pursuade goalkeepers to attend our courses with the promise of a autograph!

And the added bonus is that our goalkeeper one day camps, start off from just £10, rather than the £20 plus others charge.

That is the J4K promise to you!

Just4keepers Slovakian October 2010

Recently I returned from another trip from Slovakia spending three days, in three different locations across the amazing Slovakian countryside. I was there helping J4K coach Szilard develop the Just4keepers Slovakian Goalkeeper Training schools in his country.

Again I was amazed at the fantastic hospitality towards me from the Slovakian people it was totally mind blowing and again the standard of the Slovak goalkeepers who attended our camps was very high indeed. In fact, I will go on record to say within the next 18 months, Szilard and J4K will develop a professional goalkeeper from this country.

Me (Ray Newland) far left, Szilard Mantar far right, and Ex Slovakian International first team Goalkeeper Coach Rastislav Vincur third from left.

What was exciting about this trip, is that Rastislav Vincur with all his years of experience stated that what he seen over these three days J4K goalkeeper coaching, that Just4keepers would change the lives of many young keepers in his country and that he was very impressed with what he saw, and J4K was very much needed.

So another successful trip for Just4keepers as it is again benefiting young keepers around the world.

Ex England Keeper joins Just4keepers Goalkeeper Schools

Just4keepers Goalkeeper Coaching Schools as recently had a new addition to our coaching staff, Ex England and Premiership Goalkeeper Richard Knight has joined J4K to coach keepers throughout Derby and Nottinghamshire. Please email Richard at richj4k@hotmail.co.uk for a free session.

A bit about Richard:

Richard started in goal very young and at an early age impressed local scouts signing schoolboy forms with Stoke City at the age of 14, and was offered a YTS two year apprenticeship a year later. Whilst playing regularly for both the youth team and reserve teams at Stoke he caught the eye of premiership newcomers Derby County and signed a 3 year professional contract in 1998.

In Richards first year as a professional footballer he achieved his childhood dream of representing his country, England at both U18 and U20 levels playing alongside the likes of Steven Gerard, Michael Owen and fellow goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

During the 3 years Richard spent at Derby, first team opportunities were limited due to the quality of the two goalkeepers ahead of him, Russell Hoult and Mart Poom.  Subsequently Richard was sent out on loan to various league clubs and had spells with Carlisle Utd, Macclesfield Town, Hull City, Birmingham City and Oxford Utd.

After seeing out his contract at Derby, Richard signed permanently for Oxford Utd in his quest for regular first team football and accumulated over 100 league games winning two player of the year awards and a place in the PFA's league 1 team of the year.  A year later and after a season of doom and gloom the club were relegated and a new manager was appointed, Richard found himself out of the managers plans and moved south to play for Colchester utd where he finished his professional playing career.

Richard currently plays semi-pro football and has played over 350 games at this level. He has been lucky enough in his career to work with many exceptional goalkeeping coaches including; Eric Steele[Man Utd], Nigel Spinks[Birmingham City], Jim Barron[Northampton Town], Roy Tunks [England,Blackburn Rovers] and Alan Judge[Oxford Utd].  With all his experience in working with these highly respected coaches we believe at Just4keepers Goalkeeper Training Schools that Richard has the knowledge and experience to benefit the goalkeepers of the future.
